How DEF Is Good for the Environment

Updated: Sep 28, 2022

EPA tightened its emission standards in 2010 by mandating manufacturers to include selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology in diesel engines. SCR relies on DEF to work.

Ever since, owners of diesel vehicles have been adding DEF to their vehicles. But is DEF good for the environment? The short answer is YES.

It reduces pollution

Diesel engines emit poisonous NOx, which causes greenhouse gas effects and damages trees and crops. The emission also leads to acid rain, which pollutes water bodies and affects the fish, meats, and other produce we eat.

DEF works by combining with the exhaust stream of diesel vehicles, breaking down NOx into harmless nitrogen and water before it gets a chance to escape into the environment. As a result, our planet is much safer!

It is eco-friendly

In addition to cutting down the dangerous emissions of diesel vehicles, DEF itself is eco-friendly. It is stable and composed of harmless de-ionized water and urea, making it very safe to handle. You can also store DEF in your facility without the fear of risking your health or damaging the environment. It’s that safe.

DEF also offers other benefits besides making the environment safer.
